Aboriginal 'genius' was plagiarised
Article Abstract:
David Unaipon, an Australian Aborigine who was a talented engineer, was paid only 150 pounds sterling for 29 pieces of writing by publishing house Angus and Robertson. His ideas were plagiarized by Scottish author William Ramsay Smith for the 1925 book 'Myths and Legends of the Aborigines.' It is estimated that this book is as much as 90% unchanged from the original manuscript supplied by Unaipon. This incident provides another example of the way in which white Australians failed to respect the status of indigenous Australians.

Is there an opera in the house?
Article Abstract:
The Opera House in Sydney, Australia, has attracted controversy ever since Danish architect Jorn Utzon produced his first sketches for the building in 1957. He abandoned the project in 1966, having clashed with Minister of Public Works Davis Hughes, and the building finally constructed was a compromise of questionable quality. It now seems unlikely that plans for an overhaul will go ahead, but the Opera House still has some potential. It has an extensive programme of free events, and a new studio is to be completed in Mar 1999.

Pauline, queen of the outback
Article Abstract:
Pauline Hanson, founder of the One Nation party, has had a significant impact on Australian politics. She has gained support from residents of country towns in particular for her strong opposition to the growing numbers of Asians in Australia and to government support for Aborigines. The party appeals most powerfully to the unemployed and others in financial difficulties. There is strong evidence that the ruling National/Liberal coalition has been forced to respond to Hanson's rhetoric.
