After OJ, a black president?
Article Abstract:
The lengthy trial of OJ Simpson, which has received extensive media coverage, has highlighted wider issues regarding the current state of race relations in the US. Revelations of corruption among the police officers handling the OJ Simpson case shocked white Americans, but only confirmed for blacks the fact that they are often victims of discrimination in the legal system. The old divisions between blacks and whites are opening up again, but prominent blacks are increasingly popular among whites too. This is particularly the case with General Colin Powell, who is now campaigning for the presidency.

Will Murdoch out-Fox the regulators?
Article Abstract:
US media regulators must decide whether broadcasting network Fox Television, which is posing a growing threat to CBS, ABC and NBC, is foreign-owned and therefore in breach of US law. The network, owned by Rupert Murdoch, now has around two-thirds of the audience share of each of the top three broadcasters, but its programmes are generally of a very poor quality. Its rivals claim that the Federal Communications Commission has allowed it to become a leading broadcaster without paying the traditional 'public service' dues.

Why go on meeting like this?
Article Abstract:
Summit meetings between Russia and the US are not nearly as significant as they used to be, but still attract considerable attention in the US. The US still sees Russia as important, even though in economic terms its relations with Japan are much more significant. Russia is the only country which has enough strategic weapons to destroy the US, and the US still has a vital interest in reducing the Russian military arsenal.
