Andrew cost more than Kuwait's war
Article Abstract:
Hurricane Andrew destroyed 75,000 houses in Miami, Dade County, Florida, a 40-by-15-mile area. One in ten of 250,000 residents of Dade County is homeless. Many have no water or electricity. The cost of repair is estimated at $20 billion. Troops helping to organise relief add to the impression of a war zone. Residents deter looters by sitting in the dark with their guns and diverse communities join together to help clear the mess. Information about the amount of devastation was delayed because residents were rendered speechless.

Krajina poised to reopen old wounds
Article Abstract:
Croatian and Bosnian Serbs plan to hold a referendum on Jun 20, 1993, on re-uniting their lands. The Krajina area is at risk of war because Serbs occupy 30% of Croatia. The Serbs and Croats agreed to a truce in Feb 1992, but the territorial dispute was not settled and small-scale fighting continued. The Krajina military command ordered a military alert and curfew in the capital, Knin. Prime Minister Djordje Bjegovic seeks factories and schools rather than a return to Croatia.

SA faces new enemy - crime
Article Abstract:
A wave of crime is sweeping South Africa, and criminal activities are now surrounded with many myths. There is a particular problem with car-jacking, especially in white suburbs of Johannesburg. Innocent people are often killed following the murder of a gang leader, and cars are stolen to display at the gang leader's funeral. Crime has gone beyond a simple need to survive, and has become a way of life for many people.
