Recession could be round the corner for the US
Article Abstract:
The US economy seems to have started to be negatively affected by the East Asian crisis. Growth is expected to have been only very modest in the second quarter of 1998, if there was growth at all, and it seems possible that there will be a recession in the US in 1998. This recession would be mainly sparked off by external factors. This creates difficulties for US policymakers, who must decide whether the decline in demand from East Asia has made it unnecessary to increase interest rates.

Let's enjoy being hauled along by America - while we can
Article Abstract:
There are signs that the UK economy will continue to be pulled along by the thriving US economy. The present recovery in consumer demand in the UK seems to be emulating the US. If interest rates rise in the US but not in the UK, consumer confidence may be maintained in the UK even if it slumps in the US. However, the retail boom in the UK appears quite fragile, and economic growth in the UK will not be as strong as that seen in the US.
