Battle of the hormones
Article Abstract:
There is extensive evidence that oestrogen protects against heart disease, improves the skin and boosts sex drive, among other health benefits. However, only around 10% of menopausal women in the UK try oestrogen, and half of them stop taking it within three years, being deterred by feelings of bloatedness and by concerns about taking drugs long term. Many women are turning instead to progesterone cream, sales of which exceeded 1 million pounds sterling in 1997. Some medical experts are expressing concern about this trend, claiming that these creams do not deliver enough progesterone to the bloodstream to be of any benefit.

How not to have a carve-up
Article Abstract:
Christmas can be a particularly difficult time for families where there have been significant changes recently, such as a divorce or remarriage. It is vital to try to forget the past and to deal with the new situation as best as possible. The best approach is to focus on making arrangements which ensure that everyone has a little of what they want from Christmas. It is important not to have very high expectations and to ensure that children are not used as psychological weapons.

Does your pet have an inner life?
Article Abstract:
Scientists are now beginning to accept that it is not possible to dismiss animals as not having consciousness. The main challenge now facing those who believe that animals do have consciousness is to explain what purpose it serves. They must also address the question of when consciousness may first have appeared. A radical theory has been put forward by Stuart Hammeroff of the University of Arizona, who links consciousness with quantum processes in the brain.
