Some observers are beginning to express the view that Washington DC could see an improvement in its fortunes in the future. They point to the opening of the MCI Center, a 20,000-seater stadium and entertainment facility which was approved and constructed in only two years, and to the appointment of Camille Barnett as chief executive. She is a rather controversial figure, but is regarded as extremely intelligent and competent. There is some justification for being optimistic about the city's future, even though restoration schemes are still running behind schedule and unemployment remains high.

Nuclear pact to set seal on Chinese leader's visit

The visit of the Chinese president, Jiang Zemin, to the US, could lead to an agreement on nuclear power. Large US companies like ABB Combustion Engineering and Westinghouse would like to be able to construct nuclea power plants in China. The US is seeking a promise that China will only employ nuclear technology for peaceful purposes and will comply with international agreements governing nuclear technology. There is concern over China's relations with Iran, and opinion is divided as to whether there is a danger from China exporting nuclear technology to Iran.

Visitors can enjoy a wide range of accommodation and food, and there are many different activities to try, including skiing, swimming and cycling. It is worth visiting Santa Fe, but nearby Espanola and Taos are cheaper. In southern New Mexico, the town of Silver City offers a good base. It is possible to visit New Mexico many times and still find new attractions.
