Pernod Ricard which owns Wild Turkey bourbon is to reassume at the expense of spirits company Diageo the distribution rights of this brand in both Japan and the US when they run out later in 1998 and in 1999 respectively. Pernod feels its can perform better than Diageo and other Diageo distribution rights look in jeopardy such as Jose Curveo's tequila in Mexico and US-based Brown Forman on whose behalf Diageo distributes Southern Comfort and Jack Daniel in the UK. Drinks giants spurn Arnault's merger plan

French luxury goods concern LVMH is expressing opposition to plans by drinks groups Guinness and Grand Metropolitan to undertake a 23 billion pounds sterling merger. The French concern is seeking to merge Moet Hennessy, its champagne and cognac operation, with United Distillers and IDV, the spirits operations of Guinness and Grand Metropolitan respectively. Guinness and Grand Metropolitan are not in favour of a three-way merger, but LVMH, which is the largest shareholder in both of these companies, is seeking to gain support for its plan from other shareholders.
