Don't disturb us, we're busy
Article Abstract:
Scottish solicitors are in the late stages of preparing rights of audience proposals to allow them to argue cases before higher courts but similar efforts in England and Wales face a tougher path. At present only barristers can represent clients in higher courts but differences between the Scottish and English legal systems have facilitated the Scottish Law Society's presentation of its case. South of the border, the Lord Chancellor's Advisory Committee was set up in 1991 to consider Law Society and other submissions seeking extensions to solicitor's rights of audience. Its report is expected in March 1992 but the transition, if agreed, will take a long time.

The importance of being earnest
Article Abstract:
Local law societies have a role independent from the Law Society and vary in their programmes. Some provide training and advise on professional consultations, some are mainly social. They promote a professional image of solicitors to the public. The public relations advisory board (PRAB) of the Law Society co-ordinates local law societies' public relations and offers parliamentary liaison advice and media training.
