Driving a social revolution
Article Abstract:
The centenary of car manufacturing in the UK is an appropriate time to assess the impact of the car on society so far and its likely future impact. Over recent decades, the UK has seen the social and physical adaption of society to the growing presence of the car. Basic technology has not changed much, but there have been many gradual improvements, making cars more efficient and less polluting. The UK's physical infrastructure is now aligned with the needs of the car, and the car has also served to abolish class barriers. In the future, it is possible that the internal combustion engine will be replaced. If this leads to cars which are cheaper to purchase and to run, then further social changes could take place.

Why self-help is doomed in our frantic modern society
Article Abstract:
Some mutual organizations in the UK clearly operate very effectively. Furthermore, there are dangers associated with moving too far towards the shareholder-owned public company model. However, there will not be a significant revival of self-help organizations, despite the government's belief that new Approved Welfare Providers should be mutually-owned. This is because the circumstances which led to the creation of self-help organizations do not exist in modern society.
