Writer Eric Ambler gained a scholarship to study engineering at what is now the City University in London, England. He was already developing an interest in literature, and attended many plays. He abandoned his studies and became a technical trainee at the Swan Edison company. He became an advertising copywriter in an agency in London in 1930, and during this time gained a wider knowledge of the world. His book 'The Dark Frontier' was published by Hodder and Stoughton in 1936, and he was subsequently taken up by Alfred Knopf.

Geoffrey Dutton
Article Abstract:
Writer Geoffrey Dutton read English at the University of Adelaide, Australia, but interrupted his studies to become a flying instructor with the RAAF during the second world war. After the second world war, he studied at Magdalen College, Oxford, England. He returned to Adelaide, where he lectured in English for several years at the university. He then began a full-time career as a writer. He spent time in the US in 1963 as a visiting professor of English at Kansas State University.
