Falling in love, again
Article Abstract:
Pam Gems has rewritten Heinrich Mann's novel 'The Blue Angel' for the stage without reviewing Josef Von Sternberg's film version starring Marlene Dietrich since she saw it in 1952. She intended to create a new version, extending some of the plot. She based it in the Weimar Republic and made Lola a tougher character and the Professor a criminal. She found the film had influenced her more than she realized. Focus has to be created on stage as there are no close-ups and the audience's attention needs to be in the right place. Starting with a known plot means you have more time to add to the drama.

Distant voices, full lives
Article Abstract:
Playwright Ron Hutchinson has lived in Los Angeles for several years but uses the political situation in his native Northern Ireland as the subject for his plays. His new play 'Pygmies in the Ruins' features a recurrent image of his, distance, in this case one of time. He considers that his own geographical distancing from Ireland gives perspective to his writing and enables him to portray situations more effectively. Hutchinson is supervising the London production of his latest play from his base in Los Angeles.

Freedom from happy endings
Article Abstract:
Ludmila Petrushevskaya is one of the most important playwrights in Russia but although she has written for over 20 years, only in the last three has her work been openly performed and had official recognition. Her comments on Russian life in her comedies did not please officials. She is now receiving recognition both at home and abroad, Cinzano, Music Lessons and Three Girls In Blue all being performed in the UK. The latter earned her the name of a feminist Chekov.
