Fires that are burning tomorrow's medicines
Article Abstract:
Plants which grow only in rain forests are the basis of many commonly-used medicines. As rain forests are destroyed, this curative and economic potential is being lost. Drug companies are now joining forces with conservationists to study traditional medicines used by the tribal peoples in rainforest areas. Two pharmaceutical firms, Shaman and Biotics, are developing these plant remedies and using part of their profits to help conservation and the native people. Ethnopharmacology is worthwhile in both medical and financial terms.

Unions flex muscles as strikes hit Toronto
Article Abstract:
The Ontario Federation of Labour recently organised a large-scale protest against cuts being made by the provincial government. This resulted in most of the city's public services, including public transport, mail and schools, being shut down. The organisation, which represents more than 1 million workers, is opposed to plans to cut $9 billion in services, accounting for almost 20% of the overall provincial budget, in order to ensure that election pledges of income tax cuts can be met.
