Fontella the undefeated
Article Abstract:
Fontella Bass still sings some secular soul music, but has shifted her emphasis towards gospel music. She first came to public attention with the 1965 single 'Rescue Me,' which stayed in the US charts for almost a year and a half and has been played continuously ever since. Her 1995 come-back album, 'No Ways Tired,' includes performances by jazz trumpeter Lester Bowie, her former husband. She is shortly to perform with her gospel-singing brother David Peaston and the Church of God In Christ Choir at the Barbican in London, England.

Avon calling
Article Abstract:
The city of Bristol, England, is currently having a significant influence on the dance music scene. Groups which have evolved in Bristol, including Portishead, Massive Attack and Smith and Mighty, have a distinctive sound, benefiting from the fact that they had few local models to conform to. Bristol dance music has mainly been influenced by American hip-hop, which is appropriate in a city which has a history closely associated with the slave trade.

Something sinister this way comes
Article Abstract:
Sweden's Nau Ensemble Chamber Orchestra has released 'The Eternal,' a continuous suite of arrangements of material taken from the 1980 Joy Division album 'Closer,' along with two versions of the single 'Atmosphere.' This album contains 55 minutes of music but only 10 minutes of vocals. Producer Manne Von Ahn Oberg emphasizes that it was important to include text, but that care was taken to ensure that the vocals were not at the forefront.
