Funds for the future
Article Abstract:
Although only 1% of UK retail investment funds are managed on ethical criteria, ethical investment is expanding rapidly and is poised to secure a greater share of the overall market. The adoption of a pro-active approach, where ethical fund managers try to directly influence companies, represents a major step forward from the traditional practice, which relied heavily on negative screening. Companies such as Sun Life are launching their own ethical unit trust, which represents a growing move towards tailor-made rather than generic products. Representatives from leading UK ethical funds such as NPI and Friends Provident believe the best way to bring about long term change is to change corporate culture, by persuading management to be more responsive to ethical and environmental issues. Such an approach has worked well in the US, where managers voluntarily complied with 100 shareholder resolutions on ethical matters put forward at the AGMs of the 500 largest US companies.

ISA providers warn of delays
Article Abstract:
October 1998 is now the expected date for when the UK government will release its approved quality criteria for the planned new Individual Savings Accounts. This will cover Terms, Access and Costs for the ISAs and be known as CAT-marking. However, a delay in formulating these quality conditions, and the ongoing millennium bug problem, has led many providers to warn that they will not be able to meet the April 1999 planned launch date for the new ISA products because of the time it will take to develop the required computer systems.
