Hit me with your rhythm stick
Article Abstract:
Joji Hirota is a Japanese percussionist who found little interest in Japan when he started learning and had to begin with western drumming, but was pleased when the trend changed towards traditional Japanese drumming in the 1960s. In 1993 Hirota produced an award-winning album in conjunction with Guo Yue, a Chinaman who plays the flute, and Pol Brennan, tin whistle player. Hirota will take part in 'From Taiko to Tabla: the Beat of the World', on July 16 1996 with Peter Lockett, an English percussionist, as part of the Rhythm Sticks percussion festival.

Fakirs, saints and flagellants
Article Abstract:
A festival is held every year in the town of Bhit Shah, Pakistan, in memory of Sufi poet and musician Shah Latif Bhitai. He was the first literary figure in the province of Sindh to develop a body of written work, and composed songs that are still played today, even though he was never heard to perform a note. The festival includes a three-day long presentation of his music at the Shah Latif Auditorium, where the best musicians from Sindh perform.

Dances with camels
Article Abstract:
Pakistan has been the target of many foreign invasions in the past, and this has left it with a rich musical culture. In Sind, for example, the music resembles Spanish flamenco, while in Balochistan Tibetan-influenced flute music is frequently heard. One of the most popular musical instruments is the 'murli.' a double-flute often played by snake charmers.
