Trial put battered wives on agenda
Article Abstract:
The case of Sara Thornton, who has recently been found not guilty of murdering her violent husband, has served to bring considerable public attention to the plight of battered women. Women in her position are now generally receiving much more understanding, but there is a long way to go before the problem of domestic violence, which accounts for one in four of all recorded violent crimes, is resolved. Appeal judges are now taking into account the cumulative effects of long-term violence on women who have killed a partner who has been battering them.
