Is the handbag losing its impact?
Article Abstract:
Some observers still believe that the Conservative party should not have removed Margaret Thatcher from the leadership, especially in the light of the problems which the party is now facing on issues such as the UK's relationship with Europe. Her influence has revived with the media interest surrounding the forthcoming publication of the second volume of her memoirs. However, she will probably not cause too many problems for prime minister John Major, who will find it harder to deal with the publication of the Nolan committee recommendations on dealing with MPs outside commercial interests, which comes at the same time.

Thatcher's spectre haunts the feast
Article Abstract:
The election campaign which is now being fought in the UK will show clear signs of the influence of former prime minister Margaret Thatcher. Current prime minister John Major has stated that he will be fighting the general election on the basis of the Conservative party's performance since she came to power in 1979, and Labour party leader Tony Blair has frequently paid tribute to the significant economic changes which she made. She is reported to secretly approve of Blair, but has made a firm commitment in public to the continuation of Conservative government.

Back to the Thatcherite future with Mr Hague
Article Abstract:
It can be argued that a number of the UK Conservative party's policies in areas such as the National Health Service and the economy have clear links with those of the governments of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. The most dangerous and clearly neo-Thatcherite economic element of party leader William Hague's new programme is the commitment to reduce the tax burden over the course of a parliament. It is irrelevant whether Margaret Thatcher attends the 1999 Conservative party conference in person, as she is certainly there in spirit.
