GM food harmed rats, says research
Article Abstract:
Genetically modified food can be damaging to health, according to a group of independent scientists who support the work of plant toxins expert Arpad Pusztai. The Rowett Research Institute in Aberdeen, Scotland, forced Pusztai to retire in 1998 after he released results of experiments indicating that genetically modified potatoes cause harm to laboratory rats. Further research has shown that animals fed on genetically modified potatoes show the take-up of lectin proteins into the cells of their intestines. It is known that lectin, a plant toxin, damages the immune system and internal organs.

It is Britain's pre-eminent medical journal. Now its reputation hangs on a single issue
Article Abstract:
Conflict has arisen between the Royal Society and The Lancet, the UK's oldest medical journal, over research into genetically modified food. The Lancet is to publish part of the experiments on genetically modified potatoes undertaken by scientist Arpad Pusztai, who was suspended in 1998 from his job at the Rowett Research Institute in Aberdeen, Scotland, for making unsubstantiated allegations about the safety of genetically modified food. The journal has attracted considerable criticism for publishing this work, and has been condemned by the Royal Society.
