It's goodbye to Mr In-Between
Article Abstract:
The political record of outgoing UK Prime Minister John Major has been mixed. He was certainly the key driving force behind the Conservative party's victory in the 1992 general election, but will not really be remembered for any positive achievements. If he had not become Prime Minister, then the UK Labour party would not have had to reinvent itself, but in general he stopped things happening, rather than making them happen. He will be most remembered simply as the Prime Minister who came between Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair.

Generous and sensible Major eats his words
Article Abstract:
Prime minister John Major has taken the brave step of going back on his previous stance about the decommissioning of terrorist weapons in Northern Ireland. He had stated that weapons had to be surrendered before political talks could take place, but has now accepted that decommissioning could be undertaken while talks are in progress. It is never easy for politicians to be seen to back down, and doing so has increased Major's political status.
