King Coal isn't beaten yet
Article Abstract:
There are mixed views in the UK about the future of the coal industry. The government's energy review should bring benefits for the industry in the long term, with PowerGen and National Power, the two large generators, being forced to divest up to half of their coal-fired stations to competing operators. However, there are still short-term problems facing RJB Mining, which accounts for 85% of the deep-mined coal produced in the UK. This company supplied 26 million tonnes of the 40 million tonnes of coal used by the electricity generating industry in 1997, but has only contracted to supply 13 million tonnes so far in 1998.

A proud history, on the slag heap
Article Abstract:
Coal was the main initiator of the first industrial revolution. Miners shaped the political and social development of the labour movement. The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) had over 1 million members. Coal was nationalised in 1947 when 720,000 miners were working in 720 pits. When the Chmn of the National Coal Board Alfred Robens closed 400 pits 1961-71 and made 300,000 men redundant, he made social provisions and had the co-operation of NUM. The growth of natural gas supplies competed with coal for electricity generation.

'We're proud but not prejudiced.' (skinhead George Marshall) (Interview)
Article Abstract:
George Marshall is a skinhead whose company ST Publishing distributes Skinhead Times worldwide. Its slogan is 'Pride not Prejudice' meaning be proud of the cult, not prejudiced against others. Skinheads were originally a working class cult with ska music and aggressive attitudes. They are considered the same as neo-Nazis in the 80's and 90's, but the origins, smart dress and black music do not go with white power.
