Article Abstract:
There is a clear shift in the UK away from presenting the television news in a very formal, traditional way. This is reflected in the success of Channel 5's news programme, which is chatty and informal. Some observers are expressing concern about the depth of news presentation, and are calling for questions to be raised about what news values are appropriate for the 1990s. The concerns of the general public are clearly beginning to have a much more significant impact on the type of news items presented and on how they are presented. Furthermore, news presentation is becoming more localized.

Spare the Teletubbies: they've dumbed-up Watch with Mother
Article Abstract:
Some observers believe that the quality of children's television programmes in the UK is declining. This view is often expressed by people who do not actually watch much children's television at all. In fact, it can be argued that the standard of children's television is actually continuing to improve, with children's television programmes now addressing many important social issues. Furthermore, it is wrong to assume that all children's television programmes should be educational, as children need entertainment just as much as adults do.

The real beauty of Anna Ford is that she's a female firebrand
Article Abstract:
The reaction to criticism by broadcaster and newsreader Anna Ford of key figures in the BBC has highlighted the fact that women in television still face considerable sexism. Her complaints have been dismissed as trivial, and she has been unfairly compared with male broadcasters and with women working in other areas of television. She has had to tolerate being patronized by men for many years, while the men she has criticized have simply responded that she has no sense of humour.
