Market size
Article Abstract:
The UK market for upholstered furniture performed well beginning in 1996 to 1997, after recession subsided in 1995. This happened as suppliers offered various interest-free credit and at a time when raw materials costs were increasing. But by 1998, the upholstery market had a slow start as more consumers became more cautious on their spending because of rising interest that begun at the end of 1997. Sales were erratic throughout 1998, with total sales of upholstered furniture reaching an estimated 2.1 billion pounds sterling.

Dining room furniture
Article Abstract:
The tables and chairs sectors led the dining room furniture market in 1998, accounting for 55% and 35% value of the entire market, respectively. Despite such a growth, the living room furniture market continues to struggle, as revenue dropped significantly by 10% from 1997 to 1998. This may be accounted for by the relatively low penetration rate of dining room furniture and minimal branding in the sector. Prospects, however, appear promising with a forecast growth rate of 23% from 1998 to 2003.

Bedroom furniture
Article Abstract:
The market for bedroom furniture grew by 21% since 1993. An evidence of this growth is the 23% share of bedroom furniture in all consumer expenditure on furniture. The largest and fastest growing sector of bedroom furniture is comprised of beds and mattresses, which account for 55% of total sales value in 1997. However, the market for bedroom furniture is very fragmented, which is due to the high profile specialists both in the mattresses and beds sector and the fitted furniture sector.
