Would you buy a lighter from the Great Helmsman?
Article Abstract:
It is now possible to buy a wide range of items featuring designs based on the face of Chairman Mao Tse Tung in China. The many westerners who are eager to purchase Mao memorabilia seem to have completely forgotten that he was a dictator who was responsible through his Great Leap Forward in the late 1950s for the death of vast numbers of ordinary Chinese. The Chinese Communist Party is keen for people outside to have a greater knowledge of Mao, while ordinary Chinese people cannot understand why westerners should want to purchase these items.
