Mel Powell
Article Abstract:
Pianist, composer and arranger Melvin Epstein, known as Mel Powell, became involved in jazz music at an early age. Before he was 17 he worked in New York, NY, for leading musicians such as Georg Brunis and Bobby Hackett, and at 18 wrote arrangements for pianist Earl Hines. He played with Benny Goodman's band until summer 1942, taking a job as a staff musician in the CBS studios. He recorded with Goodman in New York, NY, in 1945, and in the late 1940s began to study composition privately. He developed muscular dystrophy and by the 1980s was confined to a wheelchair.

Bill Le Sage
Article Abstract:
Pianist, vibraphonist, arranger, composer and bandleader Bill Le Sage was born in London, England, in 1927. He taught himself to play the piano at the age of 16 and played with a number of service groups during the late 1940s. He joined the Johnny Dankworth Seven in 1950.

John Lewis
Article Abstract:
Pianist, composer and bandleader John Lewis was born in LaGrange, IL, in 1920. He studied music and anthropology at the University of New Mexico and played in an Army band during the second world war. He later became pianist in the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band.
