Ministers should know the price of lunch
Article Abstract:
Conservative cabinet minister Jonathan Aitken has attracted considerable attention recently, both for his attacks on the BBC and for revelations that he has been involved in a business which has supplied arms. He has defended himself strongly, displaying much more political energy than many of his colleagues. He is unlikely to be forced to resign, as he is a valuable ally to John Major. His difficulties should serve as a lesson to fellow MPs, who need to realise that directorships carry the responsibility to ensure that the company concerned is not involved in any questionable deals.

Westminster's mirror to the real UK
Article Abstract:
The Commons' Register of Members Interests gives a very interesting insight into the outside activities of the UK's politicians. In a rather distorted way, these activities reflect trends within the nation as a whole. Many politicians are involved in voluntary charitable work, showing that not all of them are cynical. Foreign travel by politicians is common, especially to Germany, and this reflects the growing links between the UK and Germany.

The President has such a way with words
Article Abstract:
Michael Heseltine, president of the board of trade, has certainly prompted a political scandal by reviving doubts about the role of Jonathan Aitken, chief secretary to the treasury, in the sale of arms to Iran. He has not criticised Aitken directly, but has not expressed outright support for him either. It is now generally thought that his attitude has destroyed any chance Aitken may have had of reviving his political fortunes.
