Singe and songwriter Nicolette Larson was exposed to many different types of music during her childhood, as her family moved around a lot. She was particularly influenced by Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn. She became a secretary for the Golden State Bluegrass Festival in California, and her career took off very rapidly. Her debut album, 'Nicolette,' sold 500,000 copies and was certified gold. She provided backing vocals for Neil Young's 'Harvest Moon' album in 1992.

Lawrence Payton
Article Abstract:
Lawrence Payton, who was second tenor and second lead vocalist in the 'Four Tops,' enjoyed a career which lasted for more than 40 years. The group began performing in 1953, but did not really start to become famous until the early 1960s. Like the other members of the group, Payton was a very talented entertainer, and he was partly responsible for the group's extremely impressive vocal harmonies. The group came to embody the lasting appeal of soul music.

Ruby Johnson
Article Abstract:
Singer and civil servant Ruby Johnson sang a cappella in the Temple Beth-El choir in Elizabeth City, NC. After finishing high school, she sang with Samuel Latham and the Rhythm Makers, and subsequently joined Ambrose and the Showstoppers, the house band at the Spa nightclub in Washington DC. She made her debut single, 'Calling All Boys,' for the V-Tone label in 1960, and later recorded for Stax.
