No smut, no smirking
Article Abstract:
Penthouse magazine has seen a drop in sales since the 1960s, and has been relaunched with a new editor, Tom Hilditch. Hilditch argues that the new version of Penthouse moves away from passive images of women and depicts strong women who can use their sexuality. There is humor in the new magazine, but in some ways it is little different from the old Penthouse. The focus is on women, with men absent from the picture, and this has more to do with a failure to see women and men in equal terms than Hilditch's concern about obscenity laws.

When freedom is no release
Article Abstract:
Michael Hickey, one of four men convicted in 1979 for the murder of Carl Bridgewater, was released from jail in Feb 1997 when it was ruled that his conviction could not be allowed to stand. It seemed that he would have a chance to begin a new life, having been in prison from the age of 16. However, he has found it very hard to cope with freedom. He has extreme swings of mood, and has not been able to settle down to an ordinary way of life. He has recently appeared in court on charges of theft and carrying an offensive weapon.

To tip or not to tip, what is the answer?
Article Abstract:
Many British people feel very uncomfortable about tipping, but do not dare to refuse to give a tip. This is particularly the case in restaurants, where waiters are often very poorly paid. This is the background against which Lord Bradford, who owns Porter's restaurant in Covent Garden, is introducing a Private Member's Bill into the House of Lords which would obliged restaurants to charge prices which are fully inclusive of service.
