Peace broker says deal is only way forward
Article Abstract:
There is extremely strong support for the peace agreement in Northern Ireland, according to John Hume, who sparked off the lengthy process leading to the agreement by holding a dialogue with republicanism. It was uncertain until the very last minute whether agreement would be reached, and it was the presence of Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Bertie Ahern that tipped the balance in favour of a successful conclusion. The agreement's strength lies in the fact that it recognizes the divisions in Northern Irish society and does not regard any sector of the population as the victor.

Now it's Blair's chance for peace in Ireland
Article Abstract:
It is possible that the recent general election victory of the Labour party in the UK will improve the chances of reaching a peace settlement in Northern Ireland. The nationalist vote has now reached 40% in Northern Ireland, and Sinn Fein even managed to win two of the 18 seats there. However, among republicans as a whole there is a growing acceptance that armed conflict has now almost come to the end of its natural life, and there is a strong expectation of a new peace initiative.
