Pinochet was a vile Fascist but Allende was no hero
Article Abstract:
Those who have hailed the arrest in the UK of former Chilean dictator General Augusto Pinochet should remember that Marxist Salvador Allende, whom Pinochet overthrew, was responsible for implementing dogmatic far-left reforms for which he had no mandate. He intimidated his opponents, seized businesses and confiscated property. His actions were encouraged by Fidel Castro, who regarded Allende's Chile as a basis for Cuban-style Communism in Latin America. It is also important to remember that Pinochet was only one of a considerable number of evil leaders of the 20th century.

National rot, patent remedy
Article Abstract:
Andrew Marr's new book, 'Ruling Britannia,' which deals with the political and institutional problems which the author sees as undermining democracy in the UK, has attracted mixed reactions. Some observers believe that he is right to view the House of Lords as outdated and ineffective, but others believe that an improved system of governance will not necessarily mean that the UK is better governed or act against the decline in democracy. The views expressed in the book have certainly promoted debate about the need for constitutional change.

We must defend the finance minister with a black eye
Article Abstract:
Former Malaysian Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is currently appearing in court on trumped-up charges, gained considerable respect in the international financial community. He was an extremely confident official, and was not afraid to criticize those who suggested that Asians had no respect for freedom or democracy. Some concern has been expressed about his current fate, but there is still a general reluctance to criticize the Malaysian regime. It is now time to do so very forcefully.
