Please, no more fatal illusions
Article Abstract:
The international community is now beginning to realize that it has ignored the ethnic conflict in Kosovo, Yugoslavia, for too long. Ibrahim Rugovo, president of the non-existent Albanian Kosovar state, has been eclipsed by the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), which now controls a third of the province. This army is calling for full independence for Kosovo, rather than autonomy within the Yugoslav Federation, an agreement which it might have been possible to make if the international community had responded earlier. Kosovo is now moving towards independence, but the KLA lacks any serious political policy.

Freedom flickering in a tiny corner of Kosovo
Article Abstract:
Those fighting for Albanian independence in Kosovo, Yugoslavia, with the Kosovo Liberation Army seem to firmly believe that Nato will assist them in their struggle against the Serb forces of Slobodan Milosevic. They welcome the fact that the international community has condemned the massacre of ethnic Albanians in Kosovo. However, they have failed to fully understand the likely consequences of Nato's determination not to undertake air strikes against the Serbs unless provoked. They also cannot understand why the West continues to favour a unitary Serbia, with Kosovo as part of the Yugoslav Federation.

Kosovo: journey to the heart of a ravaged people
Article Abstract:
Serb special police squads have driven ethnic Albanians out of many villages in Kosovo, Yugoslavia. Many houses stand empty, and villages are inhabited only by small numbers of Serbs. The Serb authorities claim that it was necessary to drive out ordinary Albanians because their homes were being used by terrorists. They deny that any Albanians have been taken prisoner. The Red Cross is finding it very difficult to establish exactly what happened in the region.
