Politicians practise the art of patronage
Article Abstract:
The UK government is placing considerable emphasis on promoting artistic endeavour, even going as far as to appoint Sir David Puttnam and Richard Branson to head a new creative task force. There is certainly a role for the government to play in encouraging artistic activity, but it is important to realize that increasing funding for the arts will not necessarily boost the quality or quantity of artistic output. Those who wish to encourage artistic activity must accept that the best artistic work often comes from the most unexpected places.

Right, let's don those kits and build some character
Article Abstract:
The UK government has decided to invest up to 100 million pounds sterling of National Lottery money in sport. This programme will be based around a new British Academy of Sport, which will aim to boost the performance of the country's sports teams. There will also be considerable efforts to develop sports activities in schools. This goes very much against the policies of the last few decades, during which many school playing fields were sold off.

Essay, essay, essay again
Article Abstract:
Essays were a very popular literary form in previous generations, but they are now viewed rather negatively. Modern readers dislike being preached to, and reject essays because they promote a single point of view. However, essays do in fact retain some appeal for today's audiences. They contain a certain element of danger, exposing the writer because a strong view must be presented and supported.
