Professor Colin Matthew
Article Abstract:
Historian Colin Matthew attended the Edinburgh Academy and Sedbergh School before studying at Christ Church, Oxford, England. He spent some time as a school teacher in rural Tanzania, and then studied for a DPhil at Oxford. This led to the publication of his book 'The Liberal Imperialists' in 1973. He became Lecturer in Gladstone Studies at Christ Church in 1970, and also assisted in the publication in full of the diaries of W.E. Gladstone. He became Student in 1976, and in 1978 became one of the first male Tutorial Fellows at St Hugh's. He gained a personal chair as Professor of Modern History in 1992.

Frank Tindall
Article Abstract:
Planner Frank Tindall read History at Clare College, Cambridge, England, and then enlisted in the Rifle Brigade as a private during the second world war. After the war, he gained a diploma with distinction from the School of Planning in London, England, and worked with Berthold Lubetkin on the plan for the new town of Peterlee, England. He was appointed director of planning at East Lothian council in 1950. After his retirement, he worked for the Lothians Historic Buildings Trust and the National Trust for Scotland.

Professor Sir Colin Buchanan
Article Abstract:
Town planner Colin Buchanan was born in Simla, India, in 1907. He studied Engineering at Imperial College and started his working life in the Public Works Dept of the government of Sudan. He joined the UK Ministry of Transport in 1935.
