Art historian Joseph Links left school at the age of 14 to join the fur business established by his father. He published a series of crime dossiers with Dennis Wheatley in the 1930s, and during the second world war was a Wing Commander in the RAF. He began to visit Venice, Italy, regularly from 1945, and it was there that he developed a great interest in art. He was involved in the creation of the Venice in Peril Fund, and developed an interest in Canaletto and Ruskin.

Professor Michael Jaffe
Article Abstract:
Art historian Andrew Jaffe developed an interest in art while studying at Cambridge University. He was the university's only Assistant Lecturer in Fine Arts from 1956, and took classes at the Fitzwilliam Museum. He became this museum's Director in 1973, and was extremely influential in acquiring significant works. He retired as Director in 1990, but continued his research on Rubens. He published four volumes on the collection of Italian drawings at Chatsworth in 1994.

Sir Ernst Gombrich
Article Abstract:
Art historian Ernst Gombrich was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1909. He studied art history under Josef Strzygowski and Julius von Schlosser. His first book, a history of the world for children, was published in 1936.
