Professor Jack Lively

Professor of Politics at Warwick University, UK, Jack Lively published widely on subjects such as early utilitarianism and the Englightenment. He believed in the vitality of self culture and believed his students had a duty to repay the community for the privilege of higher education. He retained an interest in politics after retiring as Professor of Politics at Warwick and continued to teach and write. Lively was of working class origins and was highly supportive of his novelist wife Penelope. He died on October 27 1998.

Edwin Brock
Article Abstract:
Poet Edwin Brock began writing poetry soon after he completed two years' national service in the Royal Navy. He wrote large amounts of poetry, and began to publish in small magazines. He became a constable in the London Metropolitan Police in the 1950s, but continued to write and read extensively. He then went on to become an advertising copywriter, and published his first collection in 1959. After his retirement from advertising, he developed his talents in areas including painting and pottery.

Hilary Corke
Article Abstract:
Writer, composer and mineralogist Hilary Corke was born in Malvern, England, in 1921. He studied English at Christ Church, Oxford, England, and served in the Royal Artillery during the second world war. He became a Lecturer in English at Fuad I University in Cairo, Egypt, before moving to Edinburgh University, Scotland, in 1951.
