Professor Sir John Hale
Article Abstract:
Historian and cultural administrator John Hale gained a scholarship to Jesus College, Oxford, England, in 1942, but did not begin his studies there until 1945, after serving as a wireless operator in the Merchant Navy. He graduated in 1948 with a top First in Modern History. He spent a year in the US, and then took up a Fellowship at Jesus College, where he remained until 1964. He developed a strong interest in the Italian Renaissance, and this was the subject of his first book, published in 1954. However, he was ultimately more influential for his involvement in the history of war.
