Farnell Electronics will benefit greatly if institutional shareholders allow it to go ahead with plans to purchase US concern Premier Industrial, leader of the market for catalogue sales of electrical components, according to chief executive Howard Poulson. There is clear industrial logic behind the deal, even if it is very ambitious, doubling the size of Farnell. Some observers feel that the purchase would allow Farnell to become one of the leading international component distributors.

Barclays Bank is seeking offers for the equities and mergers and acquisitions advisory sections of its BZW investment banking operation.
