Samuelson's argument still holds true
Article Abstract:
Economist Paul Samuelson's work has covered almost all aspects of economics. However, he has been particularly influential in the area of investment. He wrote in the 1960s of the notion that the nature of competition in large and well capitalized stock markets makes it hard for anyone to achieve consistent healthy returns from them. This view has formed the basis of what later came to known as the efficient markets concept. He advised that ordinary investors should place most of their money into a low-cost index-tracking fund.

When paying up is not playing the game fairly
Article Abstract:
Legal action being taken by a group of pension policyholders against Equitable Life over guaranteed annuity rates raises a number of interesting issues. The most significant issue is not the rate at which the policyholders' annuities are guaranteed, but the value of the fund to which this rate should be applied. Equitable argues that it intends to honour its guaranteed rates in full, but these rates will not be applied to the fund value to which the policyholders believe they are entitled.

The index-linked puzzle
Article Abstract:
It is surprising that there is not more investor interest in index-linked gilts in the UK, especially at a time when forecasts indicate that inflation will start to rise again shortly. Indeed, the large investment institutions have been increasing their holdings of index-linked gilts over the last three years, but individual investors have avoided this sector. It is possible that index-linked gilts appear to individual investors to be too complicated.
