Seeking truth under the volcano
Article Abstract:
The real-life locations for Malcolm Lowry's book 'Under the Volcano' can be found in Dollarton, an area of Vancouver, BC, and Cuernavaca, around an hour's drive south of Mexico City, Mexico. Dollarton is rather hard to locate, but once there, there are a number of sights that the visitor can directly associate with the novel. In Cuernavaca too, little attempt is made to attract visitors who may be interested in Lowry. However, it is possible to locate the house where he lived in a small street named Calle Humboldt.

High season at Eden-on-Sea
Article Abstract:
The Cook Islands, which cover a large area in the Pacific Ocean south of the Equator, are very accessible from the UK. The island of Rarotonga offers very good snorkelling very close to the shore, and has a number of excellent restaurants. It is possible to travel around the island by bus, but it is much more fun to hire a mountain bike, which allows the visitor to stop off at the island's many empty beaches.

Dark mountains rise gloomily upwards. No wonder Captain Cook named the islands New Caledonia
Article Abstract:
New Caledonia, in the South Pacific, is a collection of islands which combine a number of different cultures. Grande Isle, the main island, has dramatic mountain scenery, along with peaceful beaches and fashionable European-style hotels. It is worth visiting the smaller islands, where the pace of life is very relaxed and there are beautiful beaches.
