Should you invest in ... private railway companies?
Article Abstract:
The performance of the UK's private railway companies will be largely determined by the overall state of the domestic economy. If the economy slumps, then the current growth in passenger numbers will not continue. Operating companies recognize the need to lock into longer-term businesses, and are seeking to negotiate longer-franchises in return for increasing their investment. Railtrack, which provides the infrastructure, will require continued political support if its shares are to return to their former peak of 17 pounds sterling.

Should you invest in...food retailers?
Article Abstract:
Investors have not been very attracted to UK food retailers over recent years. Food retailers have been seen as a very uninspiring investment, and this situation has been made worse by the investigation by the Monopolies and Mergers Commission of complaints that supermarkets are overcharging customers. However, the sector has begun to attract interest again following the announcement of Asda's planned merger with general retailing group Kingfisher. It now seems possible that investors will begin to identify value in the sector.
