Sir Francis Avery Jones

Physician and gastroenterologist Francis Jones studied at St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical School, qualifying in 1934. He gained a Baly Research Scholarship in 1936, and became assistant to the professorial medical unit under Leslie Witts. He began to develop an interest in gastroenterology when he attended the foundation meeting of a gastroenterological club in 1937. He was chairman of the King's Fund Committee on Catering and Diet in Hospitals, and also chaired the King Edward VII Hospital Fund Development and Emergency Bed Service Committee.

Sir John Nabarro
Article Abstract:
Physician and endocrinologist John Nabarro played a significant role in promoting progress in the treatment of diabetes. He was chairman of the Medical and Scientific Section of the British Diabetic Association, and was able to gain National Health Service provision of blood glucose strips and modern syringes and insulins. He gained a strong reputation for his intelligence, integrity and extreme commitment to hard work, and became a leading clinical endocrinologist.

Professor Richard Schilling
Article Abstract:
Occupational physician Richard Schilling studied medicine at St Thomas' Hospital in London, England. He undertook further training with the intention of qualifying as a general practitioner, but in 1937 became an assistant industrial medical officer. After the second world war, he was seconded as scientific secretary of the Medical Research Council's Industrial Health Research Board, and was to remain in this field for the rest of his career.
