Sir Ralph Riley
Article Abstract:
Plant geneticist Ralph Riley served as an infantry officer in the second world war. He entered Sheffield University, England, in 1947 under the Ex-Serviceman's Scheme, and gained a degree in botany before studying for a PhD under John Thoday. In 1954, he became founder and first Head of the Cytogenetics Dept at the Plant Breeding Institute in Cambridge, England. He was elected to the Royal Society in 1967, and in 1972 became Director of the Plant Breeding Institute. He became Secretary (chief executive) of the Agriculture and Food Research Council in 1978.

Anthony Freeman
Article Abstract:
Civil and structural engineer Anthony Freeman gained a first class honours degree in Engineering Science at Worcester College, Oxford, England. He began his working life with engineering consultancy Maunsell, but soon moved to contractor Fairfield Mabey, where he developed a strong interest in the construction of large steel bridges. He had a close professional and personal relationship with his father, and began working for his father's firm, Freeman Fox and Partners, in 1974.
