Soap cleans up children's viewing
Article Abstract:
Statistics of what children actually watch on television reveal that they like slapstick humour and soap operas. They watch programmes intended for adults but light entertainment such as 'Noel's House Party' and 'You've Been Framed' are more popular with children. The BBC/ITV Family Viewing Policy prevents violence and bad language before 9 pm, but over 1/5th of children watch after this time in the winter. Less violence is shown than in the 1980s but it is possible that children video horror films from satellite channels.

Docklands railway excites bidders' interest
Article Abstract:
10 groups have recently expressed interest in obtaining the right to run the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), which is currently making a loss. The system, which links London's Docklands area with the City, will not become profitable until 2003 at the earliest, but this has not deterred leading private sector transport concerns, including Stagecoach and the Central London Bus Co. Its reliability has improved considerably recently, and services have been gradually extended.

The railway children
Article Abstract:
Travelling by train from London, England, to Pisa, Italy, takes 17 hours, but the journey is very worthwhile, even with small children. It is much cheaper to go by rail than to fly, and generally much more interesting. The Eurostar trip from London to Paris, France, is very efficient, but the Rome Express is more suited to families. There are particularly beautiful sea views on the final stage of the journey, between Genoa and Pisa.
