Social climbers with a head for heights
Article Abstract:
Keith Fair of Valley Clematis nursery in Lincolnshire, England, introduced 14 varieties of clematis in 1993. Clematis is best growing through other plants. 'Multi-Blue' has double flowers, but the backs and tips of the central petals have a lot of greenish-white. The second crop is always of single flowers. Doubles must be sited carefully as the blooms are fragile. 'Royal Velvet' has a different colour for each of its flowers. Clematis may be planted deeply in a half barrel at least 18 inches high.

The fountains don't work. The flower beds are off-limits. The staff are stroppy. Welcome to Italy's top garden
Article Abstract:
The small Italian hill town of Bagnaia, situated in the Lazio region, offers many attractions for tourists. These include the garden at Villa Lante, which is regarded by many as one of the best preserved Italian Renaissance gardens. Construction of the garden began in 1568, and it spreads up the hill in a series of set-pieces. There are clearly some problems with the maintenance of the garden, however, with fountains failing to operate and staff being unwilling to let visitors enter certain areas.

Pushing up daisies, lilies, poppies ...
Article Abstract:
The village Bolton Percy in North Yorkshire has a 15th century church with a unique churchyard of herbaceous plants. Horticulture lecturer Roger Brook from Askham Bryan college created the wild, relaxed effect. Self-seeders are welcomed and plants likely to become diseased are avoided. The graveyard can be maintained in two hours a week, less than mowing and edging the same area, which is such a problem for some churches that they have lifted the gravestones.
