The beat goes on
Article Abstract:
There has been a strong revival in interest in the Beat Generation, even though the figureheads of this movement, such as William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, are now dead. There has been a rise in sales of all Kerouac titles in the US, and many famous musicians contributed to 'Kicks Joy Darkness,' a tribute album to Kerouac. The key members of the Beat Generation came together in the 1940s, seeking to escape the conformity which characterized the US in the post-war period. Ginsberg, Kerouac and Burroughs all produced autobiographical works in the early 1950s, with each writer using his friends as characters.

Devils in the city of angels
Article Abstract:
Los Angeles, California, has been the location of a number of thrillers. James Ellroy wrote about the city in LA Quartet, while the 'Chinatown' trilogy by Robert Towne is also a definitive work on Los Angeles. The city grew more rapidly than its water supply and the San Fernando Reservoir left fertile land parched. 'Chinatown' deals with greed, and is also a tribute to the city. Ellroy's 'The Black Dahlia' is the first novel in the LA Quartet and also reflects real life in the city.
