The blood in the rainbow
Article Abstract:
South Africa is still divided on racial lines as one particular killing shows. The case involves a baby of six-months-old, Angelina Zwane, and Nico Steyn, who was armed and patrolling his parent's home where there had previously been an attempt at a burglary. The baby was being carried by a child of eleven years' old, a niece of the baby's mother, and Steyn argues that he thought the children were intruders, so fired shots into the air. The baby's mother has been give a pay rise since the killing. The case has led to a debate on the extent of racial bias in the legal system of South Africa.

40,000 vigilantes take bloody revenge
Article Abstract:
The Mapogo vigilante group, founded in South Africa in 1996 by John Magolego, now has 40,000 members. There are now at least 75 charges pending against Mapogo members at courts across South Africa, and it is widely acknowledged that there have been attacks with clubs and whips. Mapogo now seems to have gone beyond the reach of the law, and Magolego is presenting himself as South Africa's hand of God. His supporters believe that he is more effective than the police or politicians in tackling crime in South Africa.
