The good death and the last taboo
Article Abstract:
Views of death and the afterlife have changed over the ages. Hebrew scripture saw death as a natural end with no afterlife. Ideas of the hereafter developed later when death as a finality was questioned. The Christian view of death included an afterlife where people would either meet Jesus or go to Hell if they were sinners. This century saw a more logical approach to death as people in the West were living longer and mortality became something to fear. People continue to embrace the idea that death must have a spiritual significance.

France's last good European?
Article Abstract:
Former French prime minister Francois Mitterrand, who died recently, saw Europe as vital to the future of France. He was particularly enthusiastic about forging closer links with Germany, having been greatly affected by his experiences during the second world war. He was one of the first advocates of a single European currency, regarding it as a way of freeing Europe from the domination of the US dollar. Both France and Germany still feel that Germany must play a key role in Europe.
