The price of health and the doctor's dilemma
Article Abstract:
The management of the use of the drug Betaferon, which can be effective in treating people with the relapsing-remitting form of multiple sclerosis, highlights how the National Health Service (NHS) is now rationing drugs in a random and irrational way. Local authorities have generally ignored government guidelines on how the drug should be prescribed, and there have been many cases of patients being refused the drug, even though their neurologists wish to prescribe it. It is widely accepted that the NHS is short of money, but people cannot understand why there are such great geographical inequalities in standards of health care.

A novel tradition you just can't put down
Article Abstract:
The new Orange Prize, which will award 30,000 pounds sterling each year to the most outstanding female writer in the English language, has attracted mixed reactions. Some observers point out that women very rarely win other literary prizes, while others claim that there are many great women writers, and a prize is therefore not really necessary. It is clear that women writers are usually treated with less respect than their male counterparts, with writing being regarded as part of their everyday life, rather than a particular talent.

Marital breakdown is a fact of life. Accept it
Article Abstract:
There has been considerable criticism of the UK government's Family Law Bill, which is soon to complete its passage through Parliament. Some observers point out that it will now take almost all divorcing couples longer to complete the divorce process, while others object to the fact that the concept of fault in divorce is now being abolished. It is certainly true that the new legislation is a symbol of new social attitudes in the UK, where divorce is now seen as completely acceptable.
