There's too much life on the streets
Article Abstract:
The introduction of licensed, regulated brothels would help to remove the problem of prostitution from the streets of the UK's towns and cities, according to Peter Corkindale, head of the vice squad in Bradford, where prostitution is particularly common. He is most concerned about the rise in the numbers of under-age children working as prostitutes. In Edinburgh, moves have been made to deal with prostitution by licensing around 20 saunas and massage parlours where sex is made available. The main advantage of this approach is that it gives officials from the local health authority direct access to working prostitutes.

Retirement marks end of two-year 'nightmare.' (Alison Halford, Assistant Chief Constable of Merseyside, accepts out of court settlement)
Article Abstract:
In July 1992 Alison Halford, Assistant Chief Constable of Merseyside for nine years, decided to retire to end the case she had brought before the Equal Opportunities Commission in June 1990 for sex discrimination because she failed to gain promotion nine times. The police authority invoked disciplinary proceedings for drinking and unsavoury publicity ensued. The legal hearing was delayed. Lady Simey, chairman of the police authority from 1981-6, stated that Miss Halford's work was not affected by her drinking.

'If you are given two options, take the hard one. You'll regret it if you don't.' (mountaineer Alison Hargreaves)(Interview)
Article Abstract:
Moutaineer Alison Hargreaves, who died recently on K2, had become involved in climbing at an early age, and it soon became an obsession. However, she was also keen to balance expeditions with a normal family life, which caused considerable tension. She had recently become concerned about the very commercial element which is entering mountaineering, with people climbing by easy routes simply to gain sponsorship.
