This is a nation of husbands who have seen their wives executed and their children's hands chopped off
Article Abstract:
Rebels from the Revolutionary United Front have shown great brutality to ordinary residents of Freetown, Sierra Leone, as they have fought against Ecomog, the Nigerian-led intervention force. They have attacked women and children, and have also been responsible for looting and for arson attacks. Freetown's Connaught Hospital has now received medical supplies but further supplies are still urgently needed, as are surgeons. Most international charities have come into conflict with Ecomog after it accused them of lending communications equipment to the rebels.

Return of the rebels
Article Abstract:
The UK, the former colonial power in Sierra Leone, is giving its active support to a peace deal in Sierra Leone under which rebel leader Foday Sankoh will receive an amnesty and a place in government. The many people who have lost limbs as a result of rebel activity, have been made homeless or have seen their relatives killed are extremely frustrated at being made to submit to this deal. Human rights organizations and even United Nations officials are strongly critical of the amnesty granted to Sankoh.
