UK: BARCLAYS BANK ANNOUNCES MORE BRANCH CLOSURES
Article Abstract:
Matthew Barrett, the chief executive of Barclays Bank, announced at a Treasury Select Committee meeting yesterday, in which the big banks were able to respond to the highly critical report into the banking industry recently produced by Don Cruickshank, that the bank intends to close more of its branches. In the last few days Barclays has closed 171 branches, which has been met with anger by both consumer groups and Members of Parliament (MPs). The Consumers' Association's senior policy advisor, Philip Telford, said the actions of Barclays and some of its competitors may force the Government to bring in new legislation to protect consumers. Peter Ellwood, the chief executive of Lloyds TSB, was also present at the meeting and he restated that it was his banks policy to maintain its branches if they were the last in existence in a community. The banks were also strongly criticised by MPs for their plans to charge non-customers for using their cash machines.

UK: UNIVERSAL BANK CUSTOMERS FACE ATM FEES
Article Abstract:
Plans to install around 3,000 cash machines in small towns and rural areas over the next year and a half by the Post Office's Universal Bank could see its customers face charges for use of automatic teller machines (ATMs). It is understood that banks have examined the proposed sites for the ATMs and claim that the cost of installing a machine would not be met by enough users. It is now thought that banks will only install around a third of the total. Alliance & Leicester has an exclusive arrangement to install 1,000 machines in Post Offices, but it is feared that some of the machines will carry fees for Universal Bank customers and others not associated to Alliance & Leicester.
